If i can recommend something that might save you alot of frustration :
Finish the main missions until you get to Nolani Academy [i believe it is the 4th mission]. -Then- do all the quests in the Diessa Lowlands from Nolani. You will get higher level henchies AND a shorter route (heck last night i found Althea's Ghost right outside Nolani!). [Nolani is on the far side of Diessa]. I always grin when i hear people in Piken Square going "lfg for Altheas Ashes" etc, because you are making life so hard for yourself by doing it from there its not even funny.
Of course the quests that are directly outside Piken Square like Sharpfang , are obviously better to do from Piken.

Me's got a ele-ipno and went right through. Sure, if you charge right in, you're dead, dead, dead.
My tactics? Flare on one, as soon as it leaves my hands, press X,R - turn back and run. Let one or two of them come near, thrash them, then back in, and so on. I did those missions at lev 7 so I'm quite sure if you pay attention and DO NOT RUSH IT, you can make it. Rush is the player-killer, at any level.
IMNERHO.

Haha, at level 5 with my E/Ne, I cleared all the quests around piken with just level 3 henches. However, on my W/Mo I cleared them all when I was level 5-6 solo.

If you start from piken, take some ppl and not henches.
Otherwise start from Nolani or even Grendich Courthouse (north of Nolani) very close to the Flame Temple Corridor.

The places will become available to travel to on the map once you've done the missions to get there. Missions around that point in the game are quite easy, so you shouldn't have a problem there.

Missions and quests are two different things. Quests are those you get from mobs in some outposts, and missions are bit bigger.
First Mission you'll face is Great Northern Wall, press the 'enter mission'-button at the bottom of party list, when you've gathered party. And from there you'll be taken to other missions either automatically, or with good instructions from quests.

I believe the cycle of missions goes something like this:
1.) Great Northern Wall - "Defend the Wall"
2.) This will take you to Fort Ranik. Do the mission at Fort Ranik.
3.) Next is "Ruins of Surmia". Do this mission to get to...
4.) Nolani Academy
From Nolani, you can do missions to get warped to Yak's Bend in the Shiverpeak mountains. You can also walk out the door and be closer to the Althea's missions and possibly get better henchies as well, as someone described above.

Observe patterns for patrols and pull is my advice. As an elementalist/necromance I went from Ascalon to Piken SOLO (no henchmen) and then after doing the skill quests there I went to the Courthouse again (solo). From the courthouse I went to the Nolani Academy (with just a Hench healer).
The area is not difficult if you manage it well. You will not have the mana to spam the AOE that I have nor do you have the healing I have with the Necromancer skills so you will need henchman.

Why not do Althea's Ashes out of Yaks Bend. It does take a little while to do do but you get 6 henchmen. They are also higher in level. I tried from Piken with one char about 5 times with no success. I did it from Yaks Bend on the first try. Even then though I had a dp og 60%.
